Because of the nature of this Glossary, the descriptions will not be brief, as is usually the case, in such definitions. The subject matter is not general knowledge to many people so it was felt that in order to assist in understanding the terminology more readily, substantial definitions should be given:

Kilner  Dr Walter J an American, noted for experimental work on the human aura, as described in his book, “The Aura”.  Walter J Kilner MD, a doctor at St. Thomas Hospital in London was one of the first recorded individuals to scientifically study the aura. Through a series of objective and subjective experiments, Kilner was able to invent a crude detection device, which he stated, could observe auric activity.

By separating two pieces of glass, cementing them around the edges except for one small opening, pouring a bluish dye called dicyanin (coal-tar dye from Germany) into the hollow glass and sealing the glass, Kilner invented an apparatus that was sensitive to the ultraviolet energy spectrum. Dr. Kilner could then observe, by peering through the lens, vaporous energy (auras) extending from living bodies.

Experimentation within his work enabled him to detect diseases within the auric field of an individual before it became manifest at a physical level. It is possible to purchase ‘Aura Goggles’ from ‘Body, Mind & Spirit’ outlets which claim to allow the viewer to see the aura with various degrees of success.

Dr Kilner is the author of the book: The Human Aura, Citadel Press, 1965, ISBN 0-8065-0545-1.

Kirlian Photography  - Kirlian photography refers to a form of contact print photography, theoretically associated with high-voltage. It is named after Semyon Kirlian, who in 1939 accidentally discovered that if an object on a photographic plate is connected to a source of high voltage, small corona discharges (created by the strong electric field at the edges of the object) create an image on photographic plate.

In Kirlian photography the object being photographed, whether it be a finger, hand, or even a leaf taken from a tree, is in direct contact with the film which is placed upon a metal plate that is charged with high voltage, high frequency electricity. The photographs produced by this method depicts what appears to be coronal discharges surrounding and emanating from the objects.; In Aura Photography, no high voltage is involved as with the Kirlian technique, and no direct contact with the film is made. The images made with an Aura camera do not result from coronal discharge, the colors are projected with fiber optics.

Kirlian photography is claimed to show the existence of an invisible human atmosphere and is worthy of investigation.

Levitation  -  Within mediumship levitation is the lifting of objects and/or people which is carried out by an invisible agency. Tables lift and float around the room, as do trumpets and other objects. It has even been known for people to be elevated while seated in their chairs.

For levitation to occur in such a manner, spirit operators, working within a physical circle, externalise ectoplasm from the physical medium, mould it and form it into struts and levers to produce the mechanisms required to lift these solid objects. When the circle/séance has concluded the ectoplasm is returned to the medium’s body and this is one of the reasons great care must be taken to ensure all safety precautions for the medium are met.

Light Worker  -  This is a recent term given to people who are engaged in humanitarian work such as healing, working with energies, and generally dedicating themselves to the service of mankind. This would include mediumship but most mediums do not tend to consider themselves to be lightworkers as the word medium is not as general as lightworker; it is more specific as to the exact nature of their work with the spirit world and is sufficient.

Light Worker  The basic principle of people with similarities in character, personality and interests tend to be drawn towards one another. This is a universal law and is applied in both the physical and spiritual planes of existence

M

Materialisation  This is a phenomenon produced by physical mediumship. It is the most evidential form of any mediumistic phenomena in that the visible production of temporary ectoplasmic forms, in various stages of solidity and completeness may be observed. Witnessing these forms is not exclusive to the medium, who is usually in a state of deeps trance and will not see anything in any event, and every person in the room will be seeing the same person at exactly the same time. The materialised form is physical and manifesting in the physical world. A physical medium is required for the production of these forms as the spirit person drapes him/herself in ectoplasm which is drawn from the medium’s body in order to be made visible to those present.

Materialisation was prolific in the early days of Modern Spiritualism but unfortunately it cannot be witnessed as easily today due to lack of physical mediums or mediums unable to give the time and commitment required to produce such a phenomenon. A description of many of the early physical mediums and their work can be found in The History of Spiritualism, Vols I and II by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Medium -  A person who, under suitable conditions, can relay information from discarnate to incarnate beings. (For further information on Medium please see FAQs)

Mental Mediumship -  There are only TWO types of mediumship  -  Mental and Physical. The difference between mental and physical mediumship is very easy to detemine. In mental mediumship all the information comes through the mind of the medium and is relayed to those present. In physical mediumship everybody present sees, hears, feels etc what is happening. If one person is not aware of any particular phenomenon taking place in a physical seance then that particular phenomenon is not being produced by physical mediumship. The phenomena produced by Mental Mediumship include Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Clairsentience, Healing and Trance.

Message  -  Communication between a discarnate and incarnate person. If the spirit communicator is working with a mental medium then the thought is transferred to the medium who will pass on the information to the receipient of the message. If the spirit communicator is using a physical medium then the message can be obtained in a variety of ways, ie materialisation, transfiguration, direct voice, levitation etc.

N

Near death experience (NDE)  -  There are many near death experiences recorded whereby people find themselves passing through a dark tunnel and moving towards a bright light.  Some people are met by people in the spirit world who they know and are told that while they are going through the dying process, it is not their time to leave earth and so they find themselves back in their physical body. It should be remembered that the mind, which may drive the physical brain, is seated in the spirit body and can be, therefore, fully conscious while this experience is happening. Dr Ray Moody, an American Physician has documentated case histories of people who have had such experiences and are in a book called Life after Life and makes very interesting reading.

O

Out of the body experience (OBE)  -  The spirit is able to move out of the physical body and have many experiences in other states of existence.  This normally happens while the physical body sleeps or under anaesthetic. There are many recorded instances of people leaving their bodies during an operation and reporting conversations which have taken place while they have been, to all intents and purposes, unconscious.  A search of OBE's and NDE's (near death experiences) will provide much information on this subject.

Overshadowing -  Is a state of very light trance control placed upon the medium and is sometimes confused with transfiguration. Overshadown (Trance) is mental mediumship while Transfiguration, which requires a state of trance to occur, is a phenomenon produced by Physical Mediumship.
