Because of the nature of this Glossary, the descriptions will not be brief, as is usually the case, in such definitions. The subject matter is not general knowledge to many people so it was felt that in order to assist in understanding the terminology more readily, substantial definitions should be given:

A

Apport  An object, or even a person, can be brought into a seance room without going through the normal physical processes, ie coming through a door or window. When something is brought int htis fasion it is called an Apport. The objects are usually found in the physical world, such as pebbles, flowers, coins, books, badges etc.

It is said that by using spirit technology, it is possible for the spirit operators to de-materialise an object, move it through walls and then re-materialise it where required.

Sometimes the objects are brought from are-off lands; at other times they are taken from other rooms within the house or from the garden. It has been known for a sitter to receive a bunch of beautiful flowers from spirit and then find out from which neighbouring garden they have been 'borrowed'.

A medium is not always required for an apport to be received. It is possible to receive one while sitting on a bus in broad daylight; the object just appears in the hand.

Asport  The reverse of an Apport is an Asport. This is when an object or person is taken from the seance room and placed in some other location.

Astral Travel     when the body sleeps, the spirit will ease out of the body in order to attune to spiritual influences which will revitalise the physical body. With some psychic or mediumistic people, the spirit will actually leave the body and go travelling. At all times the spirit is attached to the body by the silver cord which is like a light-ray. Whilst this cord is endless if the body is disturbed the cord will spring back, like elastic, returning the spirit to the body, often with a jerk. While out of the body the spirit can travel through the physical world or move to a level where both incarnate and discarnate spirit can meet. If a person becomes conscious just before, or during astral projection, it is important to remain in a state of total passivity as any reactive emotions such as fear, excitement etc will bring the spirit back to its body. The body needs sleep, the spirit is eternally awake.

Aura   -  “Viewed clairvoyantly, man looks like a shrouded light which radiates tiny particles in every direction. Human bodies throw them off, as flowers their perfume. The radiation is singularly sensitive and responsive to thought. Materialism cannot dissociate the thinker from the brain, and Spiritualism is in the same dilemma in regard to the aura; it acts like an integral part of consciousness itself. The quality differs with temperaments, character and health. By its appearance, clairvoyants give their character readings and healers diagnose disease. It is a marvellous piece of mechanism that should well repay research. It is essential to all psychic manifestations and is the conduit through which the psychic healer operates, or is the active healing principle in itself. Later on, it forms the fabric of spirit clothing and becomes a tool in the hands of spirit people. It is the essential link in the production of all psychic phenomena.” (The University of Spiritualism by Harry Boddington).

Auragraphs  -  An auragraph is a reading done by a psychic, or a medium, who will link into the auric energies of the sitter. From the energies and colours expressing through the aura, the reader can colour a symbolic representation of the aura which is usually called an Auragraph. Auragraphs take many shapes and forms, and seem to be dependent upon the individual reader's inclination; some are circular with pictures contained within them, see Harold Sharp auragraphs,  while others take a human form with colours, in layers, around it. Yet again, some psychics will use a drawing of a feather, a butterfly, the eye in the peacock's tail feather to symbolise the aura. They will colour it and then give a reading to the sitter as to what the colours mean.

Aura Image Intensifier  -  normally called Aura photography.  This is the process of measuring the distribution of energy within the light spectrum as we are all encapsulated by an electro-magnetic energy field. These frequencies are constantly changing and emitting radiations which fluctuate through a marginal differential.  The vibrational energy changes are measured by two hand plate sensors, which correlate the vibrational differentials, which are then digitised through the aura camera and represented onto a Polaroid film as areas of differing colour hues. Psychics and/or Mediums then give readings based on the colours and positions on the photograph. One question to ask is: 'If a hand contact is required which feeds information to a computer, how qualified is a computer to determine an individual's auric colours? To my mind it is an expensive psychic tool but if it helps open an individual’s mind to his own psychic and spiritual potential and starts him on his journey of self-discovery, then it is money well spent.

Automatic Writing  -  This is one of the control phenomena produced by mental mediumship and it is the medium's hand which is controlled.  A pen is held lightly over a sheet of paper and the medium distracts his/her mind, perhaps by reading or watching television. The medium's hand will move over the paper giving information or details of the spirit writer. often many sittings, which only produce scribbles, have to take place before the spirit operators are proficient enough to use the pen and quite often the writing has no spaces. Once this skill has been achieved the writing can be very rapid and many well-executed scripts have been received. This phenomenon can also take place when the medium is in a deep state of trance.

                                                                                                                C

Channelling is the ability to obtain information from personalities who do not live on earth. Mediums do this when they use their sensitivity to link into spirit vibrations and, using either  clairvoyance,  clairaudience or clairsentience, or a combination of all three, bring forward evidence from a spirit communicator which is relevant to the recipient of such a communication.

Channelling is also used to describe what is more normally known as trance mediumship.

Circle A gathering of people who wish to communicate with discarnate Spirit. Circles are often called Seances,  especially if the Circle has been set up specifically to develop physical mediumship or is producing physical phenomena such as Materialisation, Direct Voice, Transfiguration etc. People come together, with a knowledgeable person who acts as a Leader of the circle, to develop their mediumistic abilities. It is within Circles that the spirit guides draw close and assist in this development. The majority of mediums continue to sit in circle throughout their lives in order to retain that closeness with spirit.

Clairaudience  -  The act of ‘clear hearing’. The thoughts, suggestions and information placed into the subconscious mind of the medium by the spirit people are now registered as sound. As with clairvoyance the medium can hear subjectively or objectively. In the subjective state the medium hears the word within his or her mind and this can be likened to re-listening, within the mind, to a radio or television programme. The voice can be heard but it is within the framework of the mind. In objective clairaudience the sound is physical, but only to the medium. It will be felt that the sound is in the room and mediums often respond by automatically speaking back but, as with clairvoyance, the realisation is nearly always there that the words are those of spirit.

W T Stead, one time editor of the Times, speaking through the aid of a medium said, "I do not transmit words. I speak to you in the language of spirits - that is to say, I think and the vibrations of my thoughts are transmitted through the intermediary of our spirit bodies. Your spirit body then gives consciousness of my thoughts to your brain".

Clairsentience  -  The act of ‘clear sensing’. Mediums use their clairsentient ability to feel the emotions, the personality, the pains etc of the communicating spirit. A medium will often think that they are aware, through the feelings received, that the communicator is a man or woman because they feel big and strong or perhaps gentle and sensitive. This can be misleading as men can be gentle and ladies can be big and strong. Sensing is purely as it says – feeling, sensing or having an awareness at an intuitive level of the spirit person.

Some mediums tend to confuse subjective clairvoyance and clairaudience with clairsentience because they are not seeing or hearing objectively. Whilst not often considered as such, clairsentience can be subjective or objective. Sometimes the medium becomes aware of a pain the communicator suffered but it is not troublesome. On other occasions there can be a very strong sensation of pain and the medium will ask that the communicator steps back a little or asks for help to remove the condition. A medium cannot speak if experiencing physical breathing difficulties as this would defeat the object of the exercise.

Clairvoyance  -  The act of 'clear seeing'. When a medium is using his or her clairvoyant ability the thoughts of the spirit people which have been impressed upon his/her subconscious mind, through the aura and registered by the conscious mind, appear as sight. The medium sees the spirit person, sometimes as one would see someone living in the physical world when that person is brought to mind. This is subjective clairvoyance. It is a mental image. It is possible, however, for mediums to see objectively and when this happens the mediums see the communicating spirits as though they were still living in this physical world. There is, however, usually still an awareness that the person seen is a resident of the spirit world and not the physical.

Communication   -  While we all recognise the word to mean speaking to one another, within mediumship communication usually refers to the contact made between incarnate and discarnate Spirit. Such communication is usually for the purpose of giving evidence of survival to grieving relatives.

D

Developing Circle  A circle, or group of people, agree to meet on a regular basis for the purpose of developing psychic or mediumistic gifts. It can be a weekly, fortnightly or even monthly circle. Within the circle the guides of any novice, or experienced, mediums within the circle will draw close and take their development to higher levels. It is within the development circle that certain mediumistic abilities may be highlighted, such as healing, clairvoyance, trance etc. and the mediums concerned can then decide whether or not they wish to explore any of these avenues within their mediumship by sitting in development circles which are specifically for the development of healing, trance etc. The development circle is the bedrock of Modern Spiritualism.

Direct Voice     -       Direct voice is a physical phenomenon which requires the externalisation of ectoplasm from the body of a physical medium. The medium usually enters a deep state of trance in order for the ectoplasm to be removed and formed into a voice box. This voice box can produce a sound similar to the discarnate Spirit’s own voice. The voice box is sometimes attached to the end of a trumpet for the purpose of amplifying the voice and in many séances the trumpet will fly around the room before gently touching the sitter who is to receive the spirit communication.

Discarnate  -  Existence without a physical body - namely spirit. Once the spirit vacates the physical body it becomes a discarnate spirit.

E

Earth Plane     -       Description sometimes used to differentiate the ordinary Earth life from the Spirit world. The earth plane is the plane of existence which a spirit inhabits while encased in a physical body. Sometimes called the material, or physical, world.

Ectoplasm  -     A substance drawn from the human body by Spirit operators for use in the production of physical phenomena.   see also EctoplasmFAQ  for a more detailed explanation.

Etherialisation  This phenomenon is not so widely known as its sister-phenomenon, Materialisation. It is said that in the early days of physical mediumship, if there was insufficient ectoplasm available to clothe a spirit form, then energies were used to form what looked like a holographic effect, thereby providing physical evidence of spirit without the inherent dangers to the medium. This phenomenon has been seen as recently as the 1980s so it is still utilised by spirit on occasion and is very effective.
